Jack Van Steenburg, a retired Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration chief safety officer, has opened a consulting firm for carriers, attorneys and safety groups, he announced on LinkedIn.
Van Steenburg, who departed the FMCSA last year, serves as principal expert for the company, which he named CMV Consulting Experts.
“I am here to assist attorney's, motor carriers and safety groups in their review of operations, compliance with the FMCSR and crash preventability reviews,” he wrote on his LinkedIn profile.
Van Steenburg, who boasts 15 years of FMCSA experience, spent the first 25 years of his career working as a staff inspector for the New York State Police, according to his LinkedIn.
He led all highway and motor carrier safety programs for the New York law enforcement agency before being hired as director of the FMCSA’s enforcement and compliance office in May 2008.
Eventually promoted to executive director, assistant administrator and chief safety officer, Van Steenburg was a familiar face for the trucking industry at an agency that has seen plenty of turnover in its leadership ranks.
Several other senior executives have left FMCSA in the past year or so.
Administrator Robin Hutcheson, Deputy Administrator Earl Adams Jr. and External Affairs Director Kala Wright have all stepped down since joining Van Steenburg in San Diego to address the American Trucking Associations’ 2022 Management Conference & Exhibition.
Interim Deputy Administrator Sue Lawless is leading the agency as its top official, Brenna Marron is director of government affairs, and Charles Fromm has succeeded Brian Stansbury as chief counsel.
