The American Transportation Research Institute announced a new survey to evaluate truck driver demographics and changes over recent decades.
The 20-question survey asks drivers to share the class of CDL they hold, the types of commodities they haul and questions relating to their race, gender, experience, earnings level, company size and other demographic data.
The survey is being conducted in concert with research assessing how underrepresented groups might be recruited into the trucking industry, including women, foster care participants and formerly incarcerated individuals, ATRI said.
ATRI is seeking insights on professional and personal aspects of truck drivers, enabling it to understand the shifts in the truck driver population over the last few decades. All data will be kept confidential, the nonprofit said.
The survey findings will build on prior driver outreach ATRI has conducted to deliver takeaways for the industry. In June, the organization released a report on challenges and strategies in recruiting and retaining women drivers.
Richard Frazer, an America’s Road Team Captain and Walmart Transportation driver, has seen lots of changes over his 33 years on the road, he said in the announcement.
“Understanding what the truck driver population looks like today is crucial to ensuring that our needs are properly addressed – whether through support, training, or policies that are specifically tailored to truck drivers,” Frazer said.
“This survey will provide valuable insights into the driver community and highlight areas where we can continue to grow,” he added.
